What’s the most common security issue for businesses? Can you guess? It’s been the same thing for the past 4 years now… It’s phishing.
In case you don’t know, a phishing attack is where you receive an email that asks you to take a particular action – click a link, or to download a file, for example.
But once you take that action, you either reveal sensitive data to the sender, or you accidentally install malicious software on your device or entire network.
Not good.
And although you may think you wouldn’t be outsmarted by this kind of email, phishing attacks are successful more often than you think.
It’s not because people are stupid. Far from it.
These emails are becoming more sophisticated, and it can be extremely difficult to distinguish between a genuine email and a phishing email.
So how can you keep your business safe from phishing?
It’s not easy, but it all starts with education:
- Make sure everyone in your business knows the risks
- Teach them the warning signs to look out for (such as grammatical errors, strange sender email addresses, and even the layout of the email)
- Tell them what to do and not to do before they click a link or open an attachment
It’s a good idea to schedule regular cyber security training for everyone in your business. This can cover everything from phishing emails to other kinds of threats.
