And the award for most common phishing scam goes to…

March 14, 2024 by jaypee

When it comes to securing your company data, one thing is certain: you have to be careful of phishing scam.

First and foremost, what makes up a phishing scam? Consider it a wolf in sheep’s clothing, disguising as a legitimate message to deceive unwary receivers. These emails frequently contain malicious links, attachments, or demands for sensitive information, all disguised as a company or somebody you know and trust.

You know what they say: knowledge is power. One of the most effective methods to remain safe is to stay educated. We can achieve this by reviewing the most popular phishing emails from last year.

There are three main categories of phishing themes: Major, moderate, and minor.

Major phishing themes

The largest category is finance-related phishing emails, which account for 54% of assaults. These emails frequently contain fake invoices or payment requests, attempting to trick recipients into disclosing financial information.

Following closely behind are notification phishing emails, which account for 35% of all attacks. These emails rely on urgency, saying that your password is going to expire or that you must take immediate action.

Moderate themes

Document and voicemail scams are the most common types of attacks, accounting for 38% and 25%, respectively. These approaches use fraudulent files or messages that trick you into compromising your security.

Minor themes

Even if minor phishing themes are less frequent, those who are unaware of what to watch out for might still be at risk. These include communications about benefits, taxes, job applications, and property.

Why should you be worried with phishing emails? Falling victim to these scams can result in substantial financial losses, data breaches, and reputational harm to your business. To secure your company, you must educate employees about the potential dangers of phishing and implement strong cyber security measures.

Awareness and vigilance are your strongest defenses against phishing attempts. Staying informed, training employees, and implementing solid security policies will protect your company’s precious assets from cyber attacks.

We help businesses like yours stay safe. If you’re not 100% sure you’re fully protected… let’s talk.
