Do you groan inwardly (or outwardly) at the prospect of yet another video call? They’re now an accepted part of our working lives, but that doesn’t make them any more exciting. Microsoft is bringing Metaverse-style avatars, known as Mesh avatars, to Teams.
You’ll be able to create your own avatar, customizing its appearance, accessories, and even reaction gestures.
According to Microsoft, we are prone to feeling stressed and exhausted after spending extended periods of time in front of the camera. Using a virtual representation of yourself to alleviate stress is just one use for these new avatars.
Even better, you won’t need to buy an expensive virtual reality headset. It’s all done with the Avatars app, which can be found in the Microsoft Teams app store.
Big tech is pouring billions of dollars into developing the Metaverse, a 3D virtual world that mimics reality. It contains many of the things you’re already familiar with, such as shops, workplaces, and even social spaces. Some believe it will become the “new internet” in the coming years.
It may seem strange to imagine a virtual world like this – but 20 years ago, it was difficult to imagine having mobile video calls with someone on the other side of the world on a regular basis.
It’s an exciting time to be alive.
The new avatar feature is currently only available in the Teams preview build, but a general release date will be announced soon.
