Is your business data at risk? Don’t take chances with old tech

June 13, 2023 by jaypee

Do you remove data from outdated PCs or external devices before disposing of them?

You may be putting your sensitive data at risk.

According to a new study conducted by a data recovery specialist, millions of lost files can be recovered from incorrectly cleaned hard drives sold online.

Your old files are accessible to more than just buyers. Cybercriminals frequently purchase used hard drives in order to recover data from them. This could range from private business information to client information.

When you’re thrilled about new technology, it’s easy to forget about old data. However, before selling or disposing of that old drive, think about what’s on it.

Even if the drive is encrypted, data recovery is still possible. And even if the drive is damaged, some of the data may still be recoverable. When it comes to sensitive information, it’s best to be cautious than sorry.

Consider this: Would you leave important documents laying around for everyone to see? Certainly not! Your digital information is entitled to the same level of security.

So, how can you protect yourself?

Don’t allow old hard drives turn into a liability. Before disposing of them, take the time to have them thoroughly wiped or destroyed. Consider hiring a professional to handle data transfer and guarantee that your old devices are wiped clean if you’re replacing gear.

This isn’t only about keeping yourself safe. It’s about protecting your employees, clients, and anyone else whose sensitive information may have been kept on that outdated drive.

It’s a little price to pay for the piece of mind that comes from knowing your data is protected from prying eyes.

Don’t take chances with your data; instead, take the following precautions:

  • Wipe or destroy old hard drives properly.
  • Hire a professional to perform hardware updates.
  • Improve your overall security procedures.
